In the process, a fuel gas as circulating gas, after it has left the waste heat boiler and before it enters the coke-quenching chamber, is cooled down in a combined scrubber/cooler to about the coolant temperature and at the same time dedusted. In addition, the circulation exit gas leaving the scrubber/cooler is to be passed through a cooling unit similar to a heat pump before it enters the coke-quenching chamber. The calorific value of the fuel gas is adjusted by feeding nitrogen or purified flue gas into the cold circulating gas upstream of the dry coke quench and/or by feeding air into the hot circulating gas downstream of the dry quench. Excess cold circulating gas is taken off upstream of the dry quench and admixed to the underfiring gas for the coke ovens, and excess circulating gas can be taken off between the dry quench and the preheater unit, passed through a waste heat boiler and admixed to the gas leaving the preheater unit. For adjusting the operating temperature, quenched gas can be taken off and fed into the line leading from the dry quench to the preheater unit.

|
