Sludge bed reactor for purifying an effluent containing biodegradable organic substances, comprising a closed enclosure 1 provided with means 13 for distributing the effluent to be treated in this enclosure, an outlet 2 for treated effluent, means 3, 5, 7, 8, 9 for removing the gas produced during the fermentation and means for stirring the sludge bed, characterised in that the means for stirring consist of agitating arms 3 distributed in the said enclosure 1 and connected to driving means 4 capable of imparting to them a suitable speed of travel in order to impart to the sludge bed a dispersion state substantially intermediate between that which the sludge bed has in a settling stage and that which it has in a thickening stage. <IMAGE>
