PURPOSE:To provide a tonic agent containing a flavan glycoside, apioisoliquiritin, as an active containing, having blood activating and hemorrhage-suppressing activities and useful for the emergent blood activation in flooding, the restoration from fatigue, improvement in refractory diseases, etc. CONSTITUTION:A tonic agent is prepared by using the apioisoliquiritin of formula as an active component. The compound of formula can be prepared from the root of licorice (plant of Leguminosae family) by methanol extraction, and is a pale yellow powdery crystal having a molecular formula of C26H30O13. It has been found newly that the compound of formla has blood-activating and hemorrhage-suppressing activities, and is useful as a tonic agent. It can be applied clinically to (1) increase the function of blood in emergent flooding and escape from the crisis, (2) restore from fatigue, and (3) improve the refractory diseases such as rheumatism, neuralgia, etc.
