PURPOSE:To obtain a character processor excellent in operability, by a method wherein when a border input is designated, the input information is converted into information on various keys for inputting border output information by referring to a designation of the vertical or horizontal direction of a border for storing the input information. CONSTITUTION:It is discriminated whether a border designation register 5 is set, and when the register 5 is set, it is discriminated whether the contents of a vertical/horizontal discriminating register 6 designate the vertical direction or the horizontal direction. Even if character information unrelated to forming a border is erroneously inputted through a keyboard 1, a character code converting part 8 is not operated in accordance with the input character information each time of inputting. Instead, the converting part 8 referrs to the contents of the register 6, and stores an underline code, a stroke code or the like into an output data buffer 9 each time the character information is inputted, with a horizontal or vertical rule in a border output as designation information.
