PURPOSE:To detect and indicate the residual amount of a thermal transfer ribbon, by a method wherein indicatory information according to the residual amount of a thermal transfer ribbon is read in correspondence with the counted number of pulse signals proportional to the rotating frequency of a payout motor for the ribbon. CONSTITUTION:The device comprises a ROM83 for storing controlling information for ribbon motors 51a, 51b, a ROM84 for storing controlling information required for indicating the residual amount of the ribbon, and a counter 85 for detecting the rotating frequency of the payout-side motor 51a. In accordance with the counted number supplied from the counter 85, predetermined information is read from the ROMs 83, 84, and is supplied to a residual amount indicating part 82.
