PURPOSE:To eliminate erroneous extraction of inflection points and to enhance approximate accuracy by setting the inflection point having the largest distance to the straight line connecting a start point and end point of a stroke to a typical one if there are more than two inflection points in a stroke. CONSTITUTION:A position and a size of a character from a character information input device 11 is normalized by a pretreatment part 12. After this, features of each stroke are extracted by a feature extraction part 13. A group of start and end points, and that of start, end and one inflection points are extracted as features in terms of a straight line and a inflection stroke, respectively. Typical inflection point extraction processing is as follows; after an inflection point is extracted and a flying stroke is removed, and more than two inflection points between start and new end points are found. Then one of them is selected and extracted as a typical inflection point.
