Gripping apparatus (10) including an elongated support member (11), a spring-loaded reel assembly (12) and a cable, rope or wire (13) wound on the reel assembly (12) and fixed to the support member to define a loop (14) which may be placed around an object so that when the reel assembly (12) is released by actuation of a pawl mechanism (31) the cable, rope or wire (13) is wound onto the reel assembly (12) to reduce the size of the loop (14) and thereby tighten the loop (14) about the object. |
