The subject of the invention is a device for clamping the abrasive backing to the orbiting plate of a portable orbital sander and for releasing the clamping, consisting of a clamping bracket which can be pivoted about an axis running parallel to the plane of the orbiting plate and can be actuated by means of a lever. The object of the invention is to realise a device in which a clamping spring can be dispensed with, the clamping action and the release of the clamping are effected in a positive manner, a greater opening angle can be obtained and the requisite components have only a low weight. This is achieved according to the invention by the clamping bracket (4) being provided with a guide strap (5) for the eccentrically bent-out part (11) of a rotatably mounted actuating lever (10), the swivel arm (14) of which can be locked in the clamping position. <IMAGE>
