NEW MATERIAL:Tricyclo[5.2.1.0<2>,<6>]dec-3-ene-8,9-dicarboxylic acid of formula I . USE:Agent for the thermal curing of an epoxy resin, intermediate raw material of polyester resin, polyimide resin, etc., and precursor of pesticides such as antibacterial agent, etc. or pharmaceuticals such as drug for central nervous system, circulatory system, etc. It is expected to have a novel characteristic as an intermediate raw material of a novel addition-type polyimide free from the defects of the cndensed-type polyimide of a polyimide resin for heat-resistant use. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced by (1) reacting dicyclopentadiene with CO and an alcohol and/or an acetal, etc. which is a derivative of the alcohol, in the presence of a Pd catalyst and a Cu or Fe compound and/or O2 which act as an oxidizing agent to regenerate the Pd to Pd<+2>, and (2) hydrolyzing the produced diester compound of formula II (R is alkyl, unsaturated alkyl, cycloalkyl, benzene-substituted alkyl, etc.) preferably with a base.
