This device relates to rolling mills comprising two superposed rolling rolls 3a-3b, with adjustable spacing, two endless carpet conveyors 5a-5b arranged on either side of the abovementioned rolls, and a reversible entrainment mechanism 7 for the two rolls and for the two conveyors. According to the invention, it comprises a transverse support 10, drive means 26-29-33-34 capable of imparting an intermittent alternating movement to the support, a transverse rectilinear tool 18 with cutting blades 20, control means 37 acting at least on the drive means 7 and 34 of the carpets and of the support, and, finally, detection and comparison means 41 detecting the length of displacement of the carpet 5a, comparing it with an adjustable reference value and acting on the abovementioned control means 37 as soon as these values are identical. <IMAGE>
