<p>A transportable power unit comprises tubular housing (1, 2, 3) and a prime mover (13, 15) having a rotary drive shaft to which rotary machinery (14) is coupled. The prime mover and the machinery are contained within and supported by the housing, which is preferably of circular cross-section. The axis of rotation of the shaft is arranged to be substantially coincident with the shear centre of the tubular housing. The power unit may include machinery such as generators or pumps for off-shore oil rigs or the like. The generator (14) or pump will be driven by a prime mover such as a gas turbine (13, 15) and the support is especially suited to resisting the extremely high torque loadings which can occur with such machinery.</p> |
