Motor of the type having a free piston, comprising: - on the one hand, a member 26 for detecting the bottom dead centre of the free piston 1, the said member acting on the fuel metering control 4a in the direction for decreasing the quantity metered: - on the other hand, a member 5 of the piston type, coupled to the drive piston 1 and moving in an auxiliary space 8 filled with a compressible fluid. The auxiliary space 8 comprises a movable wall 13 subjected to the action of a hydraulic fluid contained in a chamber 14 connected via a calibrated orifice 17 to a reservoir of fluid at a pressure less than that of the said chamber 14 so that a permanent flow of fluid gives rise to a slow and continuous decrease in the volume of the said space 8 and in that the member 18 for detecting the chosen parameter of the operation of the engine acts on the said permanent flow firstly in order to decrease it then to change its direction. <IMAGE>
