NEW MATERIAL:A carbamate derivative of formula I (X is O or S; R is halogen or lower alkyl; n is 1 or 2). EXAMPLE:2-Naphthyl N-(6-methyl-2-pyridyl)-N-methylcarbamate. USE:Useful as a herbicide, capable of exhibiting improved herbicidal action on weeds, e.g. barnyard grass, in paddy fields under flooded conditions, and suitable for a herbicide in paddy fields with substantially no toxicity to transplanted paddy rice. PREPARATION:A naphthol derivative of formula II (Y is H, halocarbonyl or halothiocarbonyl) is reacted with an aminopyridine derivative of formula III (Z is halocarbonyl group of halothiocarbonyl group when Y in formula II is H, and H when Y in formula II is halocarbonyl group or halothiocarbonyl group) in the presence of a dehydrohalogenating agent in the presence or presence or absence of a solvent, e.g. water or methanol, at 0-150 deg.C to afford the aimed compound of formula I .
