PURPOSE:To enable corner starting of scarfing in the stage of scarfing the top, bottom, right and left surfaces of a billet by using four scarfing nozzles facing each other by pressing a dummy billet to the end face of the billet and preheating the same then retreating the dummy billet and scarfing said surfaces. CONSTITUTION:The top, bottom, right and left surfaces of a billet 1 are respectively scarfed by scarfing nozzles A, B facing the top and bottom surfaces and scarfing nozzles C, D facing the right and left surfaces in the stage of scarfing the surface flaws of a billet I having a square section. A dummy billet II having the sectional area e' smaller than the sectional area of the end face (e) on the side of the billet I where scarfing starts is pressed to said end face and is preheated by the respective nozzles A, B, C, D. The billet II is then retreated from the billet I and the top, bottom, right and left surfaces of the billet I are scarfed simultaneously by the four nozzles. sticking of the slag and molten base metal generated during scarfing in the other nozzles and consequent clogging of the nozzles are obviated and the scarfing from the top, bottom, right and left surfaces is accomplished simultaneously from the end face (e). |
