The invention relates to metallurgy. The method which is the subject of the invention is of the type which consists in the molten metal being received continuously in an ingot mould 1, in the application to the molten metal, on the one hand, of an electromagnetic field generated in the inductor 2 of the ingot mould 1 by an electric current, and, on the other hand, the electromagnetic field of a stabilising turn 3 of the ingot mould, with a view to forming a column of molten metal which is then cooled in order to obtain the desired ingot, and is characterised in that the current passing through the stabilising turn 3 is phase-lagged with respect to the current of the inductor 2 by an angle of between 95 and 165 DEG , and in that its amplitude is from 0.1 to 0.4 of the amplitude of the current of the inductor. The invention applies particularly to the production of flat, round and hollow ingots having a high surface quality. <IMAGE>
