To separate the liquid fraction in aerosols, a pot-shaped filter cartridge (1) passed through in the longitudinal direction is divided into three successive regions to be passed through. The first region is an annular channel (5) on the outer casing wall of the filter cartridge (1) extending along the entire height, in which liquid is to be separated from the aerosol by condensation. The second region is a mechanically acting filter insert (7), for example made of a foam, in which solid particles are separated from the aerosol. The third region is a filter insert (3) filled with granular adsorptive packing material (2). A filtration device designed as a filter basket (9) is further provided between the packing material (2) and the outlet orifice (8) to retain abraded material from the granular packing material (2). <IMAGE>
