Method and device for controlling the brake pressure fed to wheel brake cylinders by a service brake valve in a motor vehicle, different response thresholds in the braking of the individual wheels or individual axles being equalled out in that the initial pressure level is switched from front to rear axle and vice versa. In the case of braking processes at low brake pressure this results in a controlled response of only certain wheel brake cylinders, preferably only of the front axle or only of the rear axle in a motor vehicle. In this way a uniform wear is obtained. For selective triggering a change-over device with adjustment valves triggered by the change-over device and arranged in the brake pressure lines to the front and rear axle is provided. The adjustment valves are designed as relief valves, so that in normal braking sequences all brakes can be used for deceleration. <IMAGE>
