NEW MATERIAL:A benzimidazole derivative shown by the formula I (R is alkylthia, amino, or -NHCOR1; R1 is lower alkyl, lower haloalkyl, lower alkoxy, or lower alkylamino). EXAMPLE:1-Geranyl-2-methylbenzimidazole. USE:Useful as an agricultural agent such as an insecticide, fungicide, herbicide, etc. and an antifouling agnet, etc. PREPARATION:A compound shown by the formula II (R2 is alkylthio, or amino X is halogen) or its salt is reacted with a compound shown by the formula III in a proper solvent optionally in the presence of a catalyst and in the presence (absence) of a base at -20-80 deg.C for 1-24hr, to give a compound shown by the formula I . The reaction is an equimolar reaction, but either of them may be used in excess. A compound shown by the formula IV is reacted with an elecrophilic reagent corresponding to R1 in the presence of a solvent and a base to give a compound shown by the formula V.
