In order, using simple and economical means, in a belt conveyor having a drive roll driven by a gear motor, while excluding the disadvantages of known designs without changing the effective distance between the feed point and discharge point for the conveyed material and without restricting the possible use of the conveyor in conveying or production lines having a plurality of series-connected belt conveyors feeding one another, even in a directly coupled dog-leg belt conveyor arrangement, to be able to carry out any desired adaptation of the tensioning of the conditions, conveying means to changed conveying rate conditions and/or adhesion properties of the contact side thereof and/or different load conditions on account of the loading situation thereof simply, quickly and conveniently even during continuing conveying operation in such a manner that for this purpose, to optimise the overall efficiency, practically no deadtimes occur in the conveying operation, the invention provides in an extremely simple and economical manner a mounting device holding the drive roll, provided additionally to two deflection rollers determining the conveying path of the belt conveyor, with its axis outside the connecting planes of the axes of the two deflection rollers, by means of which mounting device the centre distance of the gear motor to the deflection rollers can be varied.
