An arc furnace having a tiltable melt vessel (1) comprises a projecting portion (2) in the form of a bay, in which a sealable taphole (5) is arranged. The projecting portion (2) is provided with a casing which is closed on all sides. In the upright orientation of the vessel (1) the level of the base (3) of the projecting portion (2) in the region of the taphole (5) is arranged approximately at the same height as the base (4) of the remainder of the vessel. In preferred embodiments, the taphole (5) is closed by means of a plate (6) pivotably mounted on the outer side of the base (3) of the projecting portion (2) of the furnace vessel (1). ……
