The construction enables the position of the mast foot to be changed in the longitudinal direction during sailing and enables a defined safety release feature to be obtained. Particular achievements are that there is the least possible risk of silting-up, fixed-point operation at the rail end, and release not only under tensile loading but even during moment stressing. These objects are constructively achieved by clamping the mast-foot slide by means of movable guide surfaces of the mast slide. The adjusting mechanism is accommodated in the sealed-off inner space of the rail. Depending on the selected design of the operating lever (rotary or axial movement), the compression force of a spring is converted into the clamping action by wedge or eccentric systems. Operation is effected in two stages. In the first stage, the guide surfaces are drawn together precisely to such an extent that axial displacement is possible but vertical release still does not take place. In the second stage, the guide surfaces are fully drawn together so that the slide can be removed.
