PURPOSE:To realize better mixing of sprayed fuel and suction air and consequently improve the combustion quality by a structure wherein a swirl type injection valve is used as fuel injection valve and installed so as to face the opening of a cavity on a piston crown and at the same time the dimensions of the cavity and the installation posture of the injection valve and the like are specified. CONSTITUTION:The cavity 3 consisting of a part of a combustion chamber 9 is provided on the crown of a piston 2 and the swirl type injection valve 10, which nearly conically sprays fuel while swirling, is installed at the position facing the opening of the cavity 3. The injection valve 10 is arranged at the position, in which the spray axis of the valve 10 and the center axis of the cavity 3 do not intersect each other but run obliquely. When the maximum distance between the side surfaces opposing to each other of the cavity 3 is denoted by D, the distance between said spray axis and the axis passing through the center of the cavity 3 by beta, the length of a perpendicular dropped from the spray axis to the surface containing the position of said distance D, by H, an angle made by the spray axis and the lower end surface of the cylinder head by theta, and a fuel spray cone angle by thetas, the dimensions of various parts are formed so as to satisfy the relationship of a formula designated in the attached figure.
