The tool holder (54) has a shank (60) which can be inserted into a location bore (28) in the tool spindle (16). Mounted on the shank (60) is an end piece (64) which has a pair of flanks (66) sloping with regard to the axis (A) of the tool holder (54) and turned to the outside. A cage (24) is fastened in an axially fixed manner in the tool spindle (16). The cage (24) can be fitted together with the end piece (64) and contains a pair of rolling-contact bodies (52). A locking part (40) displaceable in the tool spindle (16) has a pair of wedge surfaces (50) which press the rolling-contact bodies (52) into a locking position upon axial relative displacement with regard to the cage (24). In the locking position, the rolling-contact bodies (52) still project radially from the cage (24) in the direction of the locking part (40). The wedge surfaces (50) are sufficiently long in order to exert a force on the rolling-contact bodies (52) in the locking position, which force is converted by the rolling-contact bodies (52) into a force acting on the end piece (64) and drawing the shank into the location bore (28). <IMAGE>
