Text commands are transmitted as ASCII code signals on a serial data transmission line to an operating unit (3). The text commands are decoded and reproduced in a data transmission format which is fed on a local area network (LAN) between the operating unit (3) and the device (1). A graphic-capable display (5) is provided in the front plate of the control desk. A first key group (6) allows a menu to be selected. Functions can be numerically entered by soft keys (9) and a second group (10).
