A device for message storage and call answering in directly controlled telephone switching systems has a microprocessor to control different operating modes. The device itself has coupling arrangements via which all the output lines of those line selectors are fed which can reach the subscriber station to which the message storage device is assigned are fed. Messages can be recorded by the device while a different call is in progress. The recorded messages are then transferred automatically to the subscriber connection once it has become free.
