The papermaking machine contains a water-permeable dewatering felt (sieve 1) to form a fibre web, in particular one layer of a multi-layer fibre web, and a headbox apparatus (15) to feed a suspension of material to be brought in a free stream onto the dewatering felt (sieve 1). At least one deflecting device (24), insertable into an edge region (C) of the free stream is arranged between the point of impact of the material suspension and the headbox apparatus (15) for separating off and leading away a partial stream of the material suspension. This arrangement makes possible, e.g., an infinitely variable setting of the format width of the fibre web to be produced. The partial stream which is deflected away before formation of the fibre web is kept away from the following working regions of the papermaking machine, in particular from a second fibre web located there, and if necessary - for re-use of the unmixed fibre material - fed back into the material feed system (feed duct 20) preceding the headbox apparatus (15). <IMAGE>
