A printed endless web (1) of packaging material is embossed between two groove-embossing rollers (5) before it enters a packaging machine. A photocell (6) senses printing marks (7) provided on the web (1) and controls the drive for the groove-embossing rollers (5) intermittently, in such a way that the groove-embossing rollers (5) are each driven for an embossing operation at a higher circumferential speed than corresponds to the normal web speed.
