Lower alkyl 2-formyl-3-(3-pyridinyl)propionates of use as chemical intermediates are prepared by hydrocarboxyalkylation of a 3-vinylpyridine with carbon monoxide and an alcohol under homogeneous catalytic conditions with a ligand associated palladium compound to give a lower alkyl 3-(3-pyridinyl)propionate which is then alpha -formylated.
