A character and figure isolating and extracting system for isolating a plurality of characters written in the vicinity of one another which does not separate them into respective characters by using a mask of predetermined shape. The system comprises first feature extracting means for horizontally scanning image information stored in an information storage means and extracting the first region as the region between a pair of varying points of the information, second feature extracting means for vertically scanning the image information and extracting a second region as the region between a pair of varying points of the information, a working memory for storing the information of the intermediate region where the first and the second regions are not superposed and to set it all '1', intermediate point extracting means for obtaining at least one scanning line at the respective intermediate regions, and isolating line setting means for obtaining an isolating line for isolating the image by utilizing the intermediate point.
