METHOD OF TREATING MOTHER LIPUOR OF REATION IN TEREPHTHALIC ACID PRODUCTION

Treatment of mother liquor from terephthalic acid prodn. by oxidn. of p-xylene with O2 in presence of heavy metal salt catalyst in acetic acid medium is described. The terephthalic acid formed in the reaction soln. is sepd. by filtration or centrifuged to provide the mother liquor. Method comprises (a) feeding the mother liquor to a tubular heater having>=1 heating tube of relatively small dia. which opens at one end into a sepn. chamber of relatively large dia.; (b) heating the liq. at above the b.p. of acetic acid; (c) discharging the mixt. into the sepn. chamber; and (d) drawing the gas phase comprising mainly acetic acid out of the sepn. chamber.
