Boxes with empty bottles, particularly in the drinks industry, frequently contain a varied mixture of bottles (for example Coca-Cola - Fanta - Sinalco etc.) and also various sizes of bottles (e.g. 0.2 l and 0.33 l). These bottles must be sorted before they are filled which in most cases requires manual and highly cost-intensive work. According to the invention, this object is achieved by a microwave system being used in the sorter. Because of the higher resolution, this system preferably operates at a frequency of 24.125 GHz (frequency licensed by the Federal German Post Office). The operating principle consists in that the measured bottle causes additional attenuation in the transmission link (transmitter-receiver) so that the Y system can be used for checking the diameter and the Z system the height of the bottle. Figure 1 shows an example of such a sorting system. The system has a Y and Z transmitter (1, 2), Y trigger (3) and Y measuring receiver (4), and a Z measuring receiver (5). Field of application: brewery, drinks and food industry. <IMAGE>
