Grey cast iron brake block for railways

A grey cast iron brake block is distinguished by low wear and low sparking if an amount of sulphur according to the formula S-(Mn/1.8) is present which is not bound to manganese, and the grey cast iron contains more than 2 per cent by weight of phosphorus. Using this, the brakes in railways can be actuated for longer and more emergency stops can be carried out than with comparable brake blocks without this free sulphur.
