Process for the preparation of aqueous erythrose solutions

Aqueous erythrose solutions are prepared by reacting an aqueous arabonate solution at 28 to 40 DEG C while maintaining a pH in the solution of 4.5 to 5 by means of hydrochloric acid with 1.7 to 2.5 mol of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hypochlorite per mol of arabonate in the form of its aqueous solution and, where appropriate, subsequent reaction of the reaction mixture. D-erythrose is a valuable starting material for the synthesis of compounds of biological interest, for example for the carbohydrate component of deoxyribonucleic acids and nucleosides.
