The invention relates to a hydraulic buffer for the acceptance of relatively large shock loads. In this arrangement, a new kind of valve is used for damping. The invention is intended to achieve minimum dimensions of the hydraulic buffer for a maximum damping force or work absorption, in order thereby to reduce the costs for materials and manufacture and obtain short overall lengths. It is the object of the invention to employ a considerably increased pressure for the damping force by reducing the pressure required for the return force. This is achieved by connecting the working space of the hydraulic buffer to the compensating space of the hydraulic buffer via a pressure relief valve designed as a liquid spring.
