Railway track ballast is consolidated by an on-track machine with a ballast-penetrating tamping unit 15 and a dynamic stabilisation unit 17 which vibrates the track horizontally while applying a vertical load. The track stabilisation unit is forward of or level with the tamping unit. A track lifting and lining unit 10 may also be provided forward of the tamping unit 15.
