The mechanism drives two rolls at different controllable speeds, with the workpiece moving between the two rolls on a straight line. The mechanism comprises an auxiliary motor (4) which controls the speeds of the rolls (1,2), and a main motor (5) kinematically connected with the auxiliary motor and the two rolls via a rotating stator (9). The main motor, with its rotating stator fitted with a gear wheel (19), drives a gear wheel (18) mounted on a shaft (15) which drives the second roll (2). The rotor (10) of the main motor drives the first roll (1) directly via a shaft (21,22). The shaft carrying the gear wheel (18) is also connected to the rotor of the auxiliary motor.
