A lifting device is disclosed, in particular for moving top surfaces (2), which device has first kinematic rod elements (6) which are connected to one another in an articulated and scissor-like manner and are fixed to the top surface (2) and to support members (3), and furthermore has second kinematic lever elements (10) which are connected pivotably to the first kinematic elements (6) and, in accordance with their angular positions, determine the angular position of the first kinematic rod elements (6) relative to one another (cf. Fig 1). A gear motor (14) acts on the first kinematic rod elements (6) via the second kinematic lever elements (10) and the latter (10) are designed in such a way that the forces applied remain essentially constant with the extent of the change in displacement of the top surface (2). As a result, the object is achieved of minimising the size of a device of this type and providing a structure which requires the application of an essentially constant force if the resulting displacement changes. <IMAGE>
