1,223,559. Gas-depolarized cells with fluidized bed anodes. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 13 March, 1968 [16 March, 1967], No. 12442/67. Heading HlB. The anodic half cell of a gas depolarized cell comprises a container having at least part of its walls permeable to electrolyte and containing anodic material at least partly consumable in particulate form, at least one electronically conducting member to provide electrical connection with the particles, and means to fluidize the particles. The particles preferably comprise a core, e.g. of glass or a plastics material, coated with anodically consumed material, and may be circulated for replacement or recharging outside the cell. Fig. 1 shows a halfcell comprising a container 1 in which one face 2 is a permeable or semipermeable membrane and a bed of zinc-coated glass spheres is fluidized by the electrolyte, which may be 5N aqueous KOH, which flows from inlet 3 via the porous distributer 7 to the outlet 4, electrical contact of the bed with terminal 6 being provided by a metal gauze 5 close to the diaphragm 2. Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), show air depolarized batteries comprising such half-cells. |
