The parent patent described self-supporting structural components having a cellular core enclosed in a rigid sheath of resin produced under low pressure conditions by reaction injection moulding. This addition describes similar structures where the sheath is made from a compression moulding material. The cores is supported clear of the mould walls by suitable spacer lugs on the side of the core, and by resting on part of the moulding matl. placed on the mould cavity. For mfr. of vehicle components such as bumpers or chassis members which require high flexural or torsional stiffness. Pref. the sheath is moulded from 'sheet moulding compound', i.e. glass fibre mat pre-impregnated with polyester resin and shaped using moulding pressure of about 10 bar.The spacers are crushed by the flow of moulding matl., so that the core matl. does not mar the surface of the moulding.
|
