摘要 <p>A transportation and/or storage vessel for irradiated nuclear fuel elements and similar radioactive materials is of cast iron, esp. S.G. cast iron or cast steel and has a lid and lifting trunnions at the top and/or bottom rim. These trunnions are designed as buffers to accept shocks in collisions or if the vessel is dropped. Pref. the trunnions are partly hollow and comprise a cylindrical handling portion, integrally formed mounting flange and thrust region, the flange and thrust region being mounted in the associated seating in the vessel wall; the hollow region provides sufficient deformation capability for the trunnion to act as a buffer. The region at the base of the flange may be designed as an intentional point of weakness to rupture in case of impact. In addn., there may be a further point of weakness in the support region. Shocks or collisions which strike the trunnion region break the trunnion or deform it rather than damaging the vessel.</p>
