The loader has monitors (21,22) monitoring the eddy layer (14) in the region of its upstream and downstream end. The monitors are coupled to a control (23,12) that controls the swing drive (11). One monitor (21) produces a signal that increases the speed when the level of tobacco rises at the upstream end of the supply container (1). The other monitor produces a signal that reduces the speed of the swing drive when the level of the tobacco rises at the downstream end of the supply container.
