PREPARATION OF INDENE DERIVATIVE

PURPOSE:To prepare readily the titled compound useful as an intermediate for drugs, etc., only by decomposing a novel hydrazone compound, for example, obtained from 4-hydroxy-1-indanone and a hydrazine compound with a base. CONSTITUTION:A novel hydrazone compound (e.g., 4-hydroxy-1-indanone p- toluenesulfonylhydrazone, etc.) shown by the formula I (R<1> is H or hyroxyl-protecting group; R<2> is aromatic or aliphatic sulfonyl) is decomposed with a base, e.g., an alkali metal, an alcoholate of an alkali metal or an alkylated alkali metal to give an indene derivative (e.g., 7-indenole, etc.) shown by the formula II. The novel compound shown by the formula II is obtained, for example, by reacting a 4-hydroxy-1- indanone shown by the formula III with a hydrazine compound directly. USE:7-Indenol is an intermediate for a drug having beta-adrenergic neuronal blocking actions.
