The kiln possesses a heating zone and a cooling zone; and the workpieces travel through the kiln on a roller track using rolls which rotate on stationary shafts. The cooling zone contains at least one auxiliary burner, which can be switched on if and when required. Burners are pref. actuated by a controller receiving signals from a temp. sensor and/or from a sensor indicating that no workpieces are being loaded onto the roller track. When no workpieces are fed onto track, due to a breakdown in prodn., the temp. of zone drops to below its usual value. After the breakdown is eliminated, the first workpieces fed onto track cool too quickly in zone, so they must be scrapped. The invention uses burners to prevent excessive cooling of zone when no workpieces are being fed through the kiln.
