PURPOSE:To improve torsional stability of a steel cord reinforcing a pneumatic radial tire, by binding steel strands into a flat or an oval shape, with another strands twisted contrariwise and arranged in a row into a core, using the number of filaments compatible with the diameter of filaments composing the core. CONSTITUTION:Two strands, each composed of two filaments with diameter (d), one S-shaped and the other Z-shaped, are arranged in a row to compose a core. Twelve filaments with a diameter (d') are twisted together around the core and bonded in a spiral form, so as to constitute a flat or an oval steel cord. A ratio of the diameter (d) of the filaments composing the core to the diameter (d') of the filaments twisted together around the core is set to the value in the range of about 0.3-2.0. This constitution not only lessens a fatigue of materials as well as improving the rate of utilizing the strength of filament, but also improves its torsional stability as well as reducing the effect of fretting.
