Supported polymn. catalysts component based on Ti trihalide and halides of other metals were obtained by binding a Ti(IV) halide to a carrier and treated with a vapor of >=1 metal. Thus, 3g SiO2 with surface 285m2/g, pore diam. 168A≦̸ and pore vol. 1.20 cm3/g was dried 7 hr at 250≦̸C and then refluxed 4hr in 150ml TiCl4, giving a product contg. 4.61 % Ti. This product was suspended in 320ml octane and 333ml chlorohexane and treated with 2.7g Mg to give a brown-black slurry, and then heated 2hr at 95≦̸C, giving a catalyst component with empirical formula TiMg38Cl76.
