C4- 30 mono-olefins are produced by oligomerizatio or co-oligomerization of C2- 15 olefins in the presence of a catalytic mixture of (a) a p -organo-nickel compound, and (b) one or more compounds of the types Be(R)a(Y)2- a and Me(R)b(Y)3- b, in which R is hydrocarbon or fydrogen, and the R's may be the same or different, Y is an acid radical, a and b are 1 or 2, and Me is Al, Ga, or In. Either or both of (a) and (b) may be present as molecular compounds with electron-donor compounds, e.g. ethers or phosphines. Typical catalyst components are (a) tetramethylcyclobutadiene nickel dichloride and its molecular compound with triphenyl phosphine, tetraphenylcyclobutadiene nickel dichloride, p -allyl nickel bromide, bis-p -allyl nickel, and p -diallyl nickel; and( b) Al(C2H5) Cl2, Al(C2H5)Br2, Al2(C2H5)3(C2H5O)Cl2, Be (C2H5)2, Al(phenyl)2Cl/triphenyl phosphine and Al(C2H5)Cl2/triphenyl phosphine. Olefins used are ethene, propene and mixtures thereof, the products being mainly dimers and trimers containing a high proportion of beta- and gamma-olefins. |
