The invention is a method of operating exhaust turbocharged internal combustion engines. It uses known methods of altering the dwell time of the inlet and exhaust valves with engine speed so as to match the engine and turbocharger requirements. This method of operation overcomes the disadvantages of the low torque produced by turbocharged engines at low speeds and results in a more advantageous torque-speed characteristic. It is also possible to alter the timing of the valves to overcome any restriction due to overheating.
