A mixed prod. comprising fibres or yarns resistant to very high temps., and fibres or yarn types which can be carbonised, is prepd. and the fibres susceptible to pyrolysis are broken down to carbon fibres, in a process for the mfr. of textile prods. contg. these fibres. Pref. the fibres or yarns resistant to high temps. are glass, boron, aramide, metals, minerals. The fibres or yarns which can be carbonised are cellulose cpds., or acrylic cpds., etc. The prod. is coated on one or both sides or is impregnated with synthetic resin. Difficulties of using carbon fibres due to their lack of ductility, in weaving, knitting, braiding and fleece formation, are avoided. Their use in a wide variety of applications e.g. aeronautics, armouring techniques, etc. is simplified. |
