摘要 1348277 Transmitters for pulse code modulation systems PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 April 1971 [12 March 1970] 23498/71 Heading G4H A transmitter for a P.C.M. system comprises a first analogue to digital converter 9, an attenuator 12, a second analogue to digital converter 13, a network 14 having a non-linear characteristic, error correcting devices 24, 25 connected to each respective analogue to digital converter and a circuit 23 which controls each error correcting device according to the value of the bit stored in the most significant stage 22 of the first analogue to digital converter. The input analogue speech signal is fed through a microphone 1, a sampling device 4 controlled by a pulse generator 6 and a delay circuit 8 to the attentuator 12. The analogue signal is also fed through the network 14 and a threshold device 15 to the analogue to digital converter 13 which is connected to a digital to analogue converter 28. The network 14 forms the logarithm to the base two of the analogue signal and three units are subtracted by the device 15, the resulting number being binary encoded and fed to a shift register 19. The binary coded attenuation factor is converted to an analogue signal by the converter 28 and sets the attenuation of the attentuator 12. The analogue signal, divided by the attentuation factor, is converted to a digital signal by the converter 9 and fed to a shift register 18 via the device 24 which consists of four electronic two position switches. Circuits 10, 11 supply a polarity bit which is transmitted via an 'OR' gate 20 in sequence with the binary coded attenuation factor and amplitude value. In the event of the circuit producing a too low attenuation factor the high analogue amplitude signal fed to the converter 9 causes a "1" bit to be present in the stage 22. The circuit 23 therefore changes over the state of the electronic two position switches thereby connecting the second to fifth stages of the converter 9 to the register 18 instead of the first to fourth stages. Thus the correct binary coded amplitude signal is fed to the register 18 and the attenuation factor is corrected due to the circuit 23 closing a switch 26 to add a voltage signal to the output of the circuit 15. A modified transmitter is described for correcting too high attenuation factors and a transmitter in which the analogue to digital converters each comprise a pulse duration modulator connected to a counter is also described, this latter transmitter enabling correction of both high and low attenuation factors.
