PURPOSE:To prepare the titled compound useful as a resin monomer, an epoxy resin hardener, a resin modifier, etc., in high purity and yield, by oxidizing an aromatic alcohol with O2-containing gas in a water-containing solvent in the presence of a catalyst containing Pt and/or Pd. CONSTITUTION:In the preparation of an aromatic polycarboxylic acid of formula II [R6-10 are -COOM (M is alkali metal) or H] (e.g. sodium terephthalate) by the oxidation of an aromatic alcohol of formula I (R1-5 are -CH2OH or H) (e.g. p-dihydroxybenzene) with O2-containing gas, the oxidation is carried out in a water- containing solvent in the presence of a catalyst containing Pt and/or Pd or Pt and/or Pd contg. Pb and/or Bi, under neutral or basic conditions. The catalyst is pref. supported on a carrier such as activated charcoal, magnesia, alumina, etc. |
